The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will welcome Big Ten Conference member Northwestern into the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Nov. 18. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (1-1) enter the contest looking to build upon the team’s 104-73 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Monday night. With the high scoring contest, the Skyhawks notched the team’s highest point total since tallying 116 points against Austin Peay on March 1, 2014. UT Martin would force 33 turnovers in the contest while pounding the paint with 54 points. As a squad, the Skyhawks tallied 19 assists while notching 17 steals – with the latter ranking as a team high since the 2015-16 season.
Four different Skyhawks would score in double figures in the contest led by the Preseason All-OVC pair of Myah Taylor and Kendall Spray. Taylor would notch a game-high 22 points behind five made three-pointers while Spray made eight field goals en route to 19 points and a career-high five steal performance. Junior guard Emanye Robertson returned to form with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals while senior forward Janekia Mason tallied 14 points to round out the quartet in double figures.
Saturday’s coaching matchup features two program greats in UT Martin’s Kevin McMillan and Northwestern’s Joe McKeown. McMillan ranks fifth on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard with a career mark of 155-103 in his ninth season. McKeown boasts a decorated 32-year career which features a 660-312 overall mark, including a 151-138 record in 10 seasons at Northwestern.
Northwestern (2-0) enters the early season matchup looking to keep things rolling after back-to-back wins to start the year. In the Wildcats’ most recent matchup, they dispatched Oakland by a score of 88-70 behind a career night from Pallas Kunaiyi-Akanah who tallied 27 points and 21 rebounds. The performance marked just the third 20-20 game in program history while her 27 points were the most-ever in a Northwestern 20-20 contest.
The Wildcats boast three players who average scoring in double figures led by Kunaiyi-Akanah with 19.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. Lindsey Pulliam (16.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.5 asp) and Abi Scheid (13.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 5.5 asp) round out the trio.
Saturday’s game marks the third meeting between the two programs and first matchup in Martin. Northwestern has won both contest played in Evanston, Ill. by scores of 79-69 (2012) and 82-59 (2016).
