MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin head golf coach Jerry Carpenter has announced the signing of Shelden Barina, as the midstate standout inked his National Letter of Intent today.
A Murfreesboro, Tenn. native, Barina has enjoyed a decorated prep career at Stewarts Creek High School. He was the 2017 District 7 champion and appeared in the Class AAA state tournament in three consecutive seasons from 2014-16.
“Shelden is a golfer that has played golf tournaments throughout the Southeast and in the state of Tennessee,” Carpenter said. “He is a seasoned veteran of several tours with wins or top finishes in events for the past three years. He has a passion for golf and is a practice guru year-round. He has a desire to compete on the collegiate level and is expected to compete for playing time next year.”
Playing under head coach Holly Pace at SCHS, Barina was the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal All-Area High School Golfer of the Year in 2016 after leading the Redhawks to their first-ever Regional 7-AAA championship. He won Region 4-AAA medalist honors with a 67 after winning the district championship with a 71 in 2006 as both tournaments were held at Indian Hills Golf Course.
As a senior, Barina added another district championship to his resumé – shooting a 72 on the Old Fort Golf Course. He also won the Murfreesboro Invitational (71) and the Stones River Invitational (75) while qualifying for the Tennessee State Amateur. In addition, he found immense success on the Sneds Tour in 2017, topping the 35-man Masters 2-Day event field with back-to-back rounds of 68. He finished second on the tour in overall scoring average (67.67).
Barina helped SCHS to the program’s first-ever District 7-AAA championship during his sophomore season, one year after helping the Redhawks to their first state tournament appearance in school history as a freshman.
On the junior level, Barina produced three AAJGT victories – capturing medalist accolades at the Tournament of Champions at the Links of Khite (2014), Fairvue Plantation (2014) and Hermitage Country Club (2013).
Barina will be a freshman for the Skyhawks in 2018-19, joining a UT Martin program that has had a team or individual representative in the NCAA Regionals in each of the past three seasons.
