The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will open the home portion of its 2017-18 schedule with a matchup against Division II foe Alabama Huntsville on Monday, Nov. 13. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks (0-1) enter the contest looking to notch the team’s first win of the season after falling short in their season opener at Southern Illinois, 84-72, on Friday night. UT Martin would shoot 41.9 percent from the floor and 40.9 percent from beyond the arc but it was the team’s 21 turnovers which proved to be too much to overcome in the contest.
Three Skyhawks scored in double figures against Southern Illinois led by the play of reigning Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Kendall Spray who tallied a team-high 20 points – including six three-pointers. Also scoring in double figures was the freshman duo of Chelsey Perry and Zaire Hicks. Perry proved versatile, tallying 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in 35 minutes of play. Hicks came off the bench and tallied 12 points, six rebounds and three steals to round out the trio of Skyhawks in double figures.
Alabama Huntsville (2-0) will look to continue its hot start to the season after pulling out a pair of victories against Lynn College (69-46) and Kentucky State (64-52) over the weekend. The contest will serve as the Chargers’ second exhibition of the season after dropping a 63-47 decision to Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Nov. 5.
The Chargers are led in scoring by junior Baylee Johnson who averages 21.5 points per game after scoring a career-high 28 points in her most recent contest against Kentucky State. Chandler Elder ranks as the team’s other top scorer, averaging 12.0 point per game along with a team high 8.0 rebounds per game.
Monday’s contest marks the seventh meeting between the two programs in series history and first since Feb. 19, 1987. UT Martin holds a 6-0 record against UAH, with the Skyhawks winning all five games played in Martin.
