Skyhawk Cross-Country | Gordon Sanders - Head Coach

Gordon Sanders

Gordon Sanders started his coaching tenure at UT Martin in 2004. During his tenure Sanders' athletes have run to the top of the Skyhawks all time lists in cross-country and track. His college coaching experience began in 1997, while he still continued the competitive running he started in 1976 that garned his many state, national, and international accolades. A Detroit native, Sanders was a nine-time all-American at Hillsdale College, which included his first national title at 10,000 meters.

After joining a club team coached by Olympic 5000 meter gold medalist, Bob Schul, Sanders earned a living on the U.S. road race circuit. Eventually Sanders improved his "Runner's World Top 100" from 52nd to 29th. During this time he qualified for the 1992 Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meter run (28:22) and marathon. The marathon qualifier was a result of Sanders winning the 1991 U.S. 10 kilometer road championship. In the same year he was the U.S. runner-up at the 8 kilometer road championships with a time of 22:36.

Sanders' coaching duties started with the U.S. All-Army track team, and Fort Campbell's "Screaming Eagles" road running team - winner of three Army-wide competitions.

Afterward, Sanders became an assistant coach for Murray State University where he was responsible for the distance squad. While there, his distance squad improved their placing to a runner-up finish at the conference cross-country championships and doubled its points at the conference track championships.

From ninth grade track in Michigan, Sanders never anticipated the impact running would have on his life - from fitness to friendships to international competition on four continents.

"I have become a lifetime runner without ever intending it." Sanders commented. "Now, as coach, my focus is to share with each student-athlete the methods to improve their running and the rewards of the intercollegiate experience. Hopefully, the rewards and benefits will be something they value for the rest of their lives."

Gordon and his wife, Tammie, reside in Princeton, Ky.
