Skyhawk Football | Jamael Lett - Defensive Backs

Jamael Lett

Jamael Lett is in his first season as a defensive assistant on the UT Martin coaching staff in 2015.

Lett comes to the Skyhawks from WP Davidson High School in Mobile, Ala., where he served as the cornerbacks coach under head coach Fred Riley since 2014. Lett began his coaching career as the cornerbacks coach for two seasons (2012-13) at Brainerd High School in Chattanooga.

Lett's coaching profession followed a successful playing career at Samford University under head coach Pat Sullivan from 2007-10. Lett logged 43 starts at cornerback over his four-year career, tallying 110 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 16 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick.

Lett established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the Southern Conference in his senior season, snagging three interceptions in 2010. His best career game came in a 38-7 win at Western Carolina on Oct. 9, as he tallied two interceptions - including one he took back for a touchdown - and two pass breakups. For his efforts, he was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week.

On the prep level, Lett was an all-region and honorable mention all-state performer at WP Davidson High School. He also was a standout performer in track and field.

A native of Fairfield, Calif., Lett graduated from Samford in 2010 and earned his Masters degree in curriculum and instruction from Tennessee Tech. He is married to his wife, Julia.
