Skyhawk Rifle | Justin Grinolds - Assistant Coach
A Skyhawk rifle alum, Justin Grinolds has served as an assistant coach for the UT Martin rifle program since 2011.
In 2012-13, UT Martin set a pair of new program benchmarks. In the season opener at Memphis, the mixed team fired a 4,601 aggregate score – the best round in school history. They followed that up with a 2,331 point performance in air rifle at Murray State in January, another program-best. As a result, both the Skyhawk mixed team (13th) and the women's team (18th) were ranked in the CRCA Top-20 national polls on Oct. 8, the first time in program history that both squads were nationally ranked.
Grinolds shot under head coach Bob Beard from 2008-11. He fired a career-high 582 in air rifle on Sept. 25, 2011 at Memphis and shot a career-best 574 in smallbore against Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State on Oct. 30, 2010.
Along with his success on the range during his three-year tenure at UT Martin, Grinolds was a standout performer in the classroom. He was a three-time Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association All-Academic honoree as well as a three-time OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
A native of Erskine, Minn., Grinolds attended Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minn. before transferring to UT Martin.
Grinolds is a certified NRA rifle instructor and has coached junior shooters for nine years. He has coached 4-H Shooting Sports programs, NRA junior smallbore teams, a BB gun program, and junior Olympic shooters. He has also served as a coach for the Civilian Marksmanship Program in their summer camp program, coaching juniors across the country. Still a competitive shooter himself, Grinolds continues to learn more about the sport that he loves and thus expands he knowledge base to allow him to be an ever great help to the athletes he coaches.
Grinolds graduated from UT Martin in Dec. 2011 with a degree in political science. He currently is pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration at UT Martin.
