Skyhawk Rifle | Justin Grinolds - Head Coach
A Skyhawk rifle alum, Justin Grinolds enters his first year as head coach after serving as an assistant coach for the UT Martin rifle program since 2011.
"As a competitive shooter with a passion for the sport of rifle shooting, I am very happy to be able to pursue a career as a collegiate rifle coach and as a Skyhawk," Grinolds said. "I am honored to have the opportunity coach the team that has had such a great impact on my life over the past six years. I am grateful to coach Bob Beard for all he has done for the team over the years and for his continued support."
"Justin has been a part of our program as a student-athlete or coach for the last six years and I am comfortable turning the program over to him," former head coach and now volunteer assistant coach Bob Beard said. "He is dedicated, energetic and knowledgeable so I know the team will be in good hands."
In 2013-2014, UT Martin set numerous program highs and had two student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Rifle Championships for the first time since 2006. During that same event held at Murray State in Feburary, the mixed team fired a 4,626 aggregate score - the best round in school history. Also during the event, the team shot a program-record 2,347 in air rifle for another program-best.
In 2012-13, both the Skyhawk mixed team (13th) and the women's team (18th) were ranked in the CRCA Top-20 national polls on Oct. 8, the first time in program history that both squads were nationally ranked.
Grinolds shot under head coach Bob Beard from 2008-11. He fired a career-high 582 in air rifle on Sept. 25, 2011 at Memphis and shot a career-best 574 in smallbore against Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State on Oct. 30, 2010.
Along with his success on the range during his three-year tenure at UT Martin, Grinolds was a standout performer in the classroom. He was a three-time Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association All-Academic honoree as well as a three-time OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
A native of Erskine, Minn., Grinolds attended Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minn. before transferring to UT Martin.
Grinolds is a certified NRA rifle instructor and has coached junior shooters for 10 years. He has coached 4-H Shooting Sports programs, NRA junior smallbore teams, a BB gun program, and junior Olympic shooters. He has also served as a coach for the Civilian Marksmanship Program in their summer camp program, coaching juniors across the country. Still a competitive shooter himself, Grinolds continues to learn more about the sport that he loves and thus expands he knowledge base to allow him to be an ever great help to the athletes he coaches.
Grinolds graduated from UT Martin in Dec. 2011 with a degree in political science and earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration in May 2014 from UT Martin.
