Skyhawk Men's Basketball | Andres Irarrazabal - Assistant Coach

A four-year letterman at UT Martin (2007-11), Andres Irarrazabal has been on the Skyhawk coaching staff since 2011-12.

"We are very fortunate to have Andres back on staff," UT Martin head coach Jason James said. "He has been through a wide range of things during his career here and that experience will help this year's team through their journey. Andres was a very hard-working, loyal player and he has been the same as an assistant. He has a bright future in this profession and I am grateful to have him back to counsel and teach these young players."

Irarrazabal spent last season as a graduate assistant before being promoted to a full-time assistant coach in the summer of 2012.

"I am very grateful and excited for this opportunity," Irarrazabal said. "I look forward to continuing to grow as a coach, but more importantly working with the rest of the coaching staff to help our team be prepared for the upcoming basketball season."

In his first year as a Skyhawk assistant, Irarrazabal coached Myles Taylor, who would go on to win 2012 OVC Freshman of the Year accolades as well as OVC All-Newcomer honors.

A Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native, Irarrazabal played two seasons under James at UT Martin. Overall, Irarrazabal played in 108 games, starting in 42 games. He brings a winning pedigree to the table, as he is one of just three players in Skyhawk history to have played in six Ohio Valley Conference tournament games (along with former teammates Benzor Simmons and Daron Hood).

Known during his playing career for his all-around knowledge of the game, Irarrazabal graduated as one of four players in UT Martin men’s basketball history to have tallied at least 300 points, 300 rebounds, 50 assists, 50 blocks and 40 steals while shooting 50 percent or better from the floor for a career. He joined Will Lewis (2003-07), Jeremy Sargent (2000-02) and Ryan DeMichael (1995-99) in that elite group.

Irarrazabal was a sophomore reserve on the program’s first-ever OVC championship squad in 2008-09, when the Skyhawks went 22-10 with a 14-4 OVC record. That team broke or tied 12 school records en route to the program’s first-ever postseason berth, falling 87-82 in a near-upset of Auburn in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

As a senior in 2010-11, Irarrazabal was a big part of UT Martin’s resurgence, as the Skyhawks tripled their win output from the previous season. He was one of the team’s most reliable players, playing in all 33 contests while starting in the final 27 games of the season. He led the team in field goal percentage (.574) and blocks (23) and also led the team in rebounds on eight different occasions. His best career game came on Jan. 20, 2011 against Southeast Missouri, when he set career-highs for points (15) and rebounds (11) for his first career double-double.

Before joining UT Martin, Irarrazabal was a McDonald’s All-American nominee at Sagemont High School, averaging 17 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks per game. He was named to the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinal’s all-county teams for three straight years while also earning second team all-state honors.

Irarrazabal graduated from UT Martin in the spring of 2011 with a degree in business and is currently pursuing a Master’s in business administration.
