Skyhawk Cross-Country | Nathan Howard - Volunteer Assistant
Nathan Howard began as a volunteer assistant coach with the cross country program in 2006. Howard graduated in 1994 from Harding University, where he ran for one of the top collegiate cross country programs in the South.
In 1993 he was named an Academic All-American, helping lead the Bisons to a conference championship and a qualification for the National Championships at Kenosha, Wisc. Through graduate school, Howard remained an active runner and continued to train with collegiate runners. At the University of Arkansas, he trained with runners who had come out of Coach John McDonnell's program, which produced 42 national championships in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Howard's favorite part of working with Gordon Sanders' cross country team is getting to know the runners and encouraging them to reach their potential as athletes and scholars.
Howard received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Arkansas in 2005. He received his M.A. in history in 1996 from Baylor University. He taught as visiting assistant professor of history at Wake Forest University in 2005-2006 before accepting a tenure-track position at UT Martin. Coming to Martin brought Howard closer to Memphis, where his parents and other immediate family reside. He graduated high school from Harding Academy of Memphis in 1989.
Howard is a native of Searcy, Ark. and he also grew up in Houston, Texas and Memphis. At UT Martin Howard teaches courses in world history, ancient Rome, ancient Greece, medieval Europe, and Renaissance/Reformation. His primary field of research is early Christian studies.
