Skyhawk Rodeo | Nelson Davis - Assistant Coach/Athletic Trainer

Nelson Davis

Nelson R. Davis serves as assistant athletic trainer and assistant rodeo coach for UT Martin. He started at UT Martin in the fall of 2007-2008, but he is no stranger to the rodeo program.

Davis was inducted into the UT Martin Rodeo Hall of Fame for his many years of commitment and service to the UT Martin Rodeo Booster Club earlier that year.

Davis was also named an honorary rodeo team member in 1997, and presented with an honorary team captain buckle award in 1998. He has been a member of the Rodeo Booster Club since 1994. He served as the organization's president from 1998-2003 and its vice president from 2004-2007.

Davis was influential in UT Martin becoming the first team located east of the Mississippi River to capture a national men's rodeo team championship in 2014. UT Martin led for the final five days of the College National Finals Rodeo and concluded the weeklong event with 755 points.

In January of 2015, Davis was awarded the Eugene Smith/Mickey O'Brien College Athletic Trainer of the Year award as part of the 2015 Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society annual meetings in Nashville. He was selected after nominations from his colleagues and peers in the sports medicine and athletic training profession. The College Athletic Trainer of the Year award, annually given out since 1990, is named for former head athletic trainers Eugene Smith of then Memphis State University and Mickey O'Brien, who served at the University of Tennessee. Davis is only the second UT Martin athletic trainer to earn the prestigious award, following Linda Barker in 2000.

Prior to coming on staff with UT Martin, Davis worked for the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Center in Martin. He has held a variety of positions within the center since he first began working there in 1996 as a volunteer/student athletic trainer. He has worked as the center's assistant manager for the last several years.

In 1998, Davis earned his athletic trainer license from the state of Tennessee. That same year he also became a certified athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification.

Davis graduated cum laude from UT Martin in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and health, and a minor in sports medicine. Along with his induction into the UT Martin Rodeo Hall of Fame, Davis was honored with a service award from the Ozark Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. He has worked as the region's medical director since 2002.

Davis, an Illinois native, is married to the former Lynn Houston of Martin. He has three children from a previous marriage: Taiga, Jordan and Dusty. Taiga, a UT Martin alum, works as a pharmacist. Jordan is a U.S. Marine Scout Sniper, and Dusty is a carpenter.
